Fishing ReportClick here for previous reports May 12 th. 2009
Hi All
Spring has been busy. So much to do. The Blessing of the Bikes is this weekend and this small town gets just a few bikers. I hope the weather holds out and is nice and so do all the bikers coming. It is beautiful out at the moment. I have been watching some trout surface feeding out back. We have had a few cold nights that have halted any big time big bug action of the great hatch we are all waiting and watching for. There is still many reports of good Steelheading going on in select spots on the PM. The Muskegon has a few more Steelhead laying around and plenty of suckers .Trout on streamers has been good but still some room for improvement once the egg is gone from there diet.
Turkey hunting has been good. Only two mornings were totally silent. I have had conversations with toms all the other days out. Had a shot at a strutting tom at 30 yds. and rolled him then he took off flying. I will try to hunt that bird again this week . A couple other birds I haven't been able to get across a road yet. A private land issue for me not them. They seem to be fond of there spot. Even if I don't get one this season I had one great hunt. The tom I had called in strutted for a seemed 30 min. at 50 - 60 yds out before coming in for a closer look at the decoy. Then I choked the shot. Hind site I should have waited until he stretched his neck out more. His head and neck was still tucked in somewhat. After resting that spot for almost a week now I will be setting up on him again hopefully in the morning.
I was out on Lake Michigan yesterday with Johnny Robinson for our first trip out and it went well... 8 for 11. A good mix of Kings and Steelhead. Yes, Kings already. All the kings were 3 and 4 year olds. 2 of the 3 Steelhead were dropbacks and one was very fresh. Down riggers set at 55 ft.down and Steelhead on boards at 15 ft.down all were on spoons. Nothing touched a dipsy diver rod yesterday. The day turned out good. We had a rough start to the day. The carb gave us a little trouble until we got the choke unstuck. Then we were off on our opening day of the Big Lake Season. We missed the peak bite in the A.M. but chipped chopped away at them thru the afternoon until we had a decent box to clean. 1 to 3 footers most of the day while we worked on our suntan.
Mushroom hunting isn't all done yet but it is slowing down a bit. Could use a little rain to help them along with more warmer nights. We have had a few nights with frost here lately. The white morels are coming in soon and the grays are finishing up around here. One of my friends picked about 25 lbs of gray/ blacks so far. He has a a lot of great spots.
I have had a few trips April 29 th. with Joe and John they caught some nice steelhead and browns. I was also out with Ryan and friends on the Muskegon when the water was over 6000cfm on May 1 st. we hooked fish and caught a few but it wasn't a easy day. May 6 th. rowed the U.S. Forest Service from 37 to Bowmans to cut back some problem trees and dead fall to allow safe passage down the river for all it's users. On May 9 th. Chris Raines and I was out with a crew filming Hardcore Purist a show for 2010 on the Mo. We went out in the evening and it fished very well for the couple of hours on the water. We all had a great time... in the woods and on the water the past couple weeks...get outdoors and have some fun in the sun.
